What Is CrossFit?

Started as a maverick gym in Santa Cruz, CrossFit has spread worldwide, becoming the principal strength & conditioning program for police academies and tactical op's teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, & hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. Why? Because CrossFit works...FAST.

CrossFit delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. CrossFit's specialty is not specializing. Daily life, like many sports and professions, (and even combat) requires broad levels of fitness. CrossFit's program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind.

Today's high school and collegiate athletic programs and teams are highly competitive environments requiring extraordinary fitness levels and exceptional athletic ability. Ironically, fitness programs at most schools don't do enough to guarantee participation or success. Why not give yourself the edge and ensure that you are realizing your entire potential? CrossFit's intense, constantly varied, functional fitness programming is ideal for preparing all scholastic athletes for the regimens of high school and college. A CrossFit trained athlete will leave opponents in the dust when training and when it comes to overall fitness and athletic stamina. Want proof? By increasing an athlete’s work capacity, we increase his/her ability to practice more. More practice time and the ability to handle more rigorous training in-between games means more drills, more skill work, more team integration, fewer injuries, and more wins.

Our ESA program was created by professional athletes, top collegiate athletes and CrossFit Certified Trainers who wanted to build a better performance training program for scholastic athletes in all sports. We employ exercises, lifts and movements that top collegiate and professional athletes use and that cannot be done inside a standard gym. Whether you're playing football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball or basketball, or any highly demanding sport our ESA program will improve your athletic fitness capacity beyond anything you thought possible.

While most "strength and conditioning" programs only focus on "strength" and "stamina" (i.e. cardio). We focus on improving performance across the ten recognized physical domains:

CrossFit trained athletes are generally stronger, faster able to perform at a higher intensity for longer periods of time, and mentally able to push themselves much harder than your 'average' athlete. Not to mention that CrossFit athletes are eager to prove their fitness with measurable and repeatable results, not just on the field but off it as well.

By combining Olympic & power lifting with gymnastic movements, bodyweight exercises and running - and executing at them high intensity, we significantly improve fitness and athletic performance in a fraction of the time. With dedicated, experienced coaching from proven former highschool and collegiate athletes, we'll fine tune the athlete's training to overcome weaknesses and enhance strengths.

Diablo CrossFit is the first gym in the East Bay to be CrossFit Football Certified!


CrossFit Football is the first “sport specific” iteration of CrossFit. While CrossFit’s brand of training has been developed to maximize an athlete’s work capacity and general physical preparedness (GPP) for it’s own sake, CrossFit Football’s emphasis is to increase performance on game day.

CrossFit Football takes the ‘constantly varied, functional, high intensity training’ of CrossFit and integrates strength, power and speed movements that will be needed on the field, with an emphasis on short bursts of intensity followed by a recovery period identical to the time it takes to run a play and get back to the line. Many of the total workout times are designed to replicate what a highly demanding 15 minute quarter of Football would.
