Article: Why You Should Step Up Your Workout - WSJ

". . . Dr. Williams' studies have shown that exceeding the federally recommended exercise guidelines can reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, glaucoma, diabetes and other diseases by as much as 70% above the benefits of merely meeting the guidelines. At first I was excited to read about this 'heretic' challenging the Conventional Wisdom. Then I saw what he was prescribing. . . 40+ miles per week! Increase 1.4 weekly miles per year after middle age! Whoa. More is not necessarily better, but I will admit that his research does point to 'more' than the minimum is a step in the right direction. -jj

In line at the grocery store behind Jazz:

"Holy sh-t! You are a mama!"

Is that what you gave me

Thursday night classes were great, unpleasant as this WOD was. I commented to people that this would be a good WOD to make your kids do when they start doing poorly in school to put some teeth into the, "What?! Do you want to grow up to be a ditch digger?!"
Virtual shoveling definitely requires some discipline to stay mostly upright to keep from rounding. Lots of gentile and not so gentile reminders from the coach to adjust technique throughout the WOD.
Dawn (Shawna's sister) came in for the first time in 3 weeks... what a comeback WOD to choose! Both she and her sister had great form.
Malissa was putting the "comeback" in her comeback WOD, too. She also got her first kipping pullup with her chin WELL over the bar (with lots of airspace, between), but I was just barely turning around towards her as she was dropping off the bar with the biggest smile EVER, so it was like a tree falling in a forest with no one around. :-(
Don't worry, Mal, the trainers are going to start following you around, now, with unwaivering stares, so we can catch the next one! (and she commented that when it all came together for that one pullup--timing, etc., it simply felt EASY and she just flew up there).
Oh, and it was cold.

Posted by: Mark L. at January 8, 2010 7:03 AM

...and of course I meant "gentle", though, technically, all the reminders were also gentile.

6am Class

Very impressive class this morning doing Friday Fran. Scott closed in on his time of 8:34 that is 4 mins off his PR. Nice going Scott!!

Matt did RX for the first time at 5:28 RX. Way to go Matt.

Lauren did great on her first Fran as well as Nancy going up in weight. Nice job ladies.

Marc K came in just after class to do Fran and this is his first one he's ever done. Finished in 4:47.

Lots of PR's this morning and hope to see more in the coming year.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

Another booty shot by JJ! :)
Jaz you are such an inspiration and great to work out with! Can't wait to meet the little one soon.

Posted by: Sarah A. at January 8, 2010 9:55 AM

Jaz-
I always knew you were an exceptionally special mother but these last several months have proven what an exceptional athlete you are, too. You make it look easy -it's not - and that pushes others to push themselves. Love the mother-son shoes. I'm eagerly anticipating holding your little one while you WOD...

Posted by: Amy at January 8, 2010 10:05 AM

Dang...my rest day. Fran is my favorite (besides Helen) Jazz....what can I say? You are too cool. It's hard to believe and even harder to explain to people what you are capable of! Got to work out with Meg R (aka quiet Meg) last night. She is such a pleasure to be around..ALWAYS smiling and encouraging.

My first time with the virtual shoveling last night...I think I like it!

And Craig...you think there won't be any bars or rings at the sectional? What the heck am I supposed to do? RUN??? Really? dang

Jer.... I thought we had a deal on the ass shot! It's not everyday I let men take pictures of my back side for fun and then find them posted on websites. Seems like this one officially qualifies for the "you'll know when I post an ass shot" picture.

Thanks for walking this journey with me everyone. I should write a little book about how this process has changed me, yet again. It has been hard to succumb to mother nature and give up for a time much of what I worked for at the gym prior to getting pregnant... all those PR's, great times and heavy weights that surpassed my imagination of what I would ever accomplish. But now I feel like I’ve had the chance to change my mind and my perspective on a deeper level yet again and be reminded that no matter what the task or obstacle, you can accomplish more than imagined if you just keep at it and try a little at a time. After walking this journey for the third time, I have finally overcome the belief that being pregnant means you end up weighing a ton, are tired all the time, have a right to eat anything and everything you "crave" and become much less able for ten months out of your life. Sorry ladies, the secret is out. You really don't have to gain 60lbs when you're pregnant, you don't have to eat everything in sight and you can exercise and continue to workout at close to the level you were when it all started. Yes, growing a life is hard, exhausting at times, takes a great deal of energy in all different capacities, is different for everyone, and should be given full respect just to get the job done in any capacity. On the other hand, it can be a time to thrive, try new things and enjoy the challenges in a new way and somehow actually inspire people along the way... never did I think I would be doing the inspiring or that someone would even consider taking a picture of me 9 months pregnant to post on a website.

So, with less than 19 days to go, I am also amazed by how some of these basic life changes that many of us have made can effect even pregnancy. Today I weigh just 15 more lbs than when I began my pregnancies with both Abby and Isaiah. I have gained a total of 30 lbs opposed to the 45 plus lbs I gained with my other two. I have still indulged in many of my cravings along the way and enjoyed the holidays and all it’s goodness. I have been by far much stronger and more able this pregnancy than with my others and overall had plenty of energy to take care of all my responsibilities throughout my day and throw fun parties and host family throughout the holidays.

Just this last week I have noticed a change in my capacity and have had to take things much slower as even walking has been uncomfortable and brings on contractions. I can tell that my body is now preparing for the third greatest workout of my life…. really, one of the most primal experiences there is. I know that I will need a lot of grace for myself after the baby is born and that just getting to the gym with three kids after nights of sleep deprivation will be a huge success. I do know that some of my greatest challenges are yet to come, but at least I am sure that if I want to I can get back to the place I was before those beautiful May days spent in the wine country with my amazing husband. Cheers to that!

Thanks again to all of you! We can’t wait to introduce you to this new little life, one whom we are confident will be quite active and strong. At the moment it feels as if the babe is doing burpees in me and I;m sure ready for it to start learning them on the outside of me instead ;) We’ll be sure to let you know when the fun starts!

Thanks for all the kind words guys ;)

Amy... I thought I was going to get to see you today! I popped in for a bit around one and saw your car only to be disappointed that I just missed you :(I will absolutely take you up on holding the babe for a quick workout... and then swap with you so I can hold yours! I have missed working out around you and watching you dominate in the gym. I am so glad we have each other and miss Meg to be a support post baby when things get a bit more tricky! A mamma/gym co-op swap may be in order down the road. Fun times ahead!

Damper on One?

Too much fun today, around 1:30-3 PLUS. The secret was figured out by Greg P. He deserves the credit. I can't say what it is or he will kill me. It was so much fun seeing the look on Mountain's and Mark's face when they saw these inflated numbers for the CHOM, they are like two mad scientists.
The best part was seeing the one and only Jaz still working out. It got better because Meg R. came in, in her third trimester . I forget all my aches and pains, complaints, when i see these marvelous woman. They are always so damn positive and they look great. Best to both.

620 ChOM for me! =)

Fran is a mean, mean girl. I did her rx'd for the first time right before Christmas and again today... was 7 seconds slower today (12:06). I blame Iowa and my mama's cooking.

Sarah ROCKING the butterfly pull-ups post Fran. Be ready for a sub-4 Fran from that lady soon. You look like you were born humping the air...

Malissa rx-ing the pull-ups!!! What an accomplishment! You continue to amaze me.

Craig was finished before I finished my 21 pull-ups I think. He's very loud... and a great motivator ;)

Posted by: Katie at January 8, 2010 6:34 PM

At work until tomorrow, took a rest day yesterday and it felt great. Hopped on the bike and rode for 60 minutes on the rollers. If you've never seen or used rollers, it's pretty crazy. Basically riding your bike on a treadmill without the tread. Here's a video from YouTube.

First Time On Rollers

Couldn't let all the DCF'ers enjoy Fran and not participate myself. I'm at work, so naturally I had to spice it up a bit. Jumped off the bike and threw on the gear and battled with "Firefighter Fran". Basically it's Fran RX, but wearing full turnouts and breathing through and SCBA. The gear and SCBA weigh around 60-75 pounds, and breathing through a mask makes it even that more interesting.

10:58 as RX'd

Awesome WOD today...I think I might be falling for FRAN! Big thanks to Sarah today for pushing me through the pull-ups-I couldn't have finished without her! :)
