Friday - Nov 6th, 2009 "Happy Birthday. . . everyone!"
![]()
Meg H., Yvonne, Mel (one of the ChOM women leaders from last month) and Chris (one of the men's leaders) go for the new November Challenge of the Month: Supermans.
Workout: (it was Michelle R's birthday yesterday, Amy and Nick's today, this workout is for them, and all the rock'n Scorpios at the gym).
3 rounds for time:
10 sumo deadlfit high pull (men: 75, women: 55)
10 reps strict press (men: 75, women: 55)
Row 500m
Record total time.
Cycling and Endurance Event: "Conversations with Chris Carmichael" on Saturday, November 14th.
Chris was the personal cycling coach of Lance Armstrong, and he is doing a book signing and lecture at the John F. Kennedy University next week. We have flyers at the gym if you are interested in going (post to comments if you plan on going as well).
Challenge of the Month: November - "Supermans" for time
November's ChOM will be a static hold at the top of a back extension, arms extended held over a chair for consistency and judging (see photo above). The GHD machine must be set so that your quads are on the pad (like you are going to do a back extension).
No male or female categories. Maximum time, first and second place will win a prize. You are free to try as many times as you want during the month of November. Good Luck!

What makes me think the top 10 ChOM times this month are going to be the ladies?
We started off the evening with the ChOM. Two new high water marks were set with Tanya at 2:22 and Hylie at THREE MINUTES FLAT! INHUMAN! Hylie might have cheated because she got to have her son, Cody, yelling her through the whole thing. "Come ON, MOM!"
Next, we took a look at the whiteboard where people are logging their goals remaining for the year. Do you have your fitness ambitions posted where we can all keep you accountable? DO IT!
Front squats followed. People really worked on getting that chest and those elbows up at the bottom, so they could keep the weight over their center and really push against it. It's a mental discipline as much as anything, and we saw some progress as sets progressed. I can see people getting more flexible in the wrist and shoulders, so front squats are definitely prettier.
Fran light was just mean. Heather B. mentioned that usually she has to rest on pullups, but with the 2X jumping substitute for people that couldn't do 15 consecutive, there was just no valid excuse to rest. Great mini metcon. Mike P. and Stav opted for full Fran which was a slow grinder after pounding out those front squats.
Katie forgot to double the jumping pullups, so she had to do 45 jumping pullups all in a row at the end while a bunch of us yelled at her.
Great work, everyone!

Oh, I love you Sarah!!!! You know I am just kidding and have been in such a crazy mood this week, in a good way!! I think all this Crosscrack has gone to my head!! I have so far to go and I am loving the challenge.

Great workout this morning - 6AM Crew "let" me join them. Josh rolled in and rolled out to go puke - not feeling so well. Get better bud.
Neck & neck with the speedster Matt - wheelhouse workout for him (and me..). 8:22 for both of us.
ANOTHER 6AM FIRST MUSCLE-UP! Mike Capbaret (Cabby) grinded it out - he refused to do seated or jumping m-ups. Just watched me do a couple then grinded his out. Cool! There will be more - Alan, Matt, Nancy, Anita... for sure!
Juanell & Hector nailed the wod with us this morning too. Great to see both at 6AM.
Posted by: Craig at November 6, 2009 8:09 AM
By the way, I predict a victory for the girls in the Superman contest.
Cabby (Mike C) is the leading man after a 1:28 this morning. However, Hylie's 3 minutes looks unbeatable.
Was she holding the chair?

I am announcing a DQ for my Filthy Fifty time on Wed. I was taking up DFC to a friend and going over some of the things we do, and when showing him the Filthy Fifty movements I realized I never did the back exstensions. So still need to do FF and get a bench mark time.

WOD today at 10am with Sarah's crew. Nice job everyone! I pretty much can't stand rowing, so I knew this would be fun. Not sure what my rowing splits were, I think 1:39/1:45/1:50? something like that. SDHP's and SP unbroken until last set, which was very tough.
7:55 as RX'd
My big question is...how the H*LL did I beat Craig in this workout? Come on Mr. 1:21!!
Posted by: Stavros @ Diablo CrossFit at November 6, 2009 11:44 AM
No offense, but I think Craig is actually Mr. 1:18!
Posted by: Mark L. at November 6, 2009 12:00 PM
There might be a rain delay in softball today. I will post a comment at 4PM whether game is on or not.
First game is 6:30PM, second game 8:50PM when we win the first game.

When Craig did this WOD today I thought it was going to be a slam dunk for him to get through the SDHP and Push Press like nothing. However when rounds 2 and especially 3rd round came on to him it was 3-4 reps, a few quick breaths and then finish them off. Boy was he breathing like a Mofo on round 3 rows. Nice going Craig!!!
Posted by: Big Dave at November 6, 2009 1:14 PM
Recent 1:21, legendary 1:19.6.
Which begs the question: how long can you claim a performance? In other words, if I bench-pressed 405 at age 26, what is the statute of limitations for claiming a 405bp? Or, a sub 3 Fran for that matter? Hmmmm.
Funniest comment of the day so far: RonC.
Stav, easing my back into the metcons - rowing was what reinjured me last time. (that, and I suck right now.. but feeling much better!)
Props, Dante. Good man.
Posted by: Craig at November 6, 2009 1:21 PM
It's all love Craig! I just thought this WOD was built for you, glad to hear you're easing back in...no pun intended.
The statue of limitations is a slippery slope. What if a time was on the whiteboard for 2 years...is it still valid? Seems like there's a difference between a record or PR, and actual day-to-day performance. Seems like 3-6 months is realistic in terms of performance claims? but things can change much quicker.
Posted by: Stavros @ Diablo CrossFit at November 6, 2009 1:40 PM
*statute of limitations
Posted by: Stavros @ Diablo CrossFit at November 6, 2009 1:44 PM
405 bench press!?! That's more than mu deadlift lol =(
Posted by: Andrew at November 6, 2009 2:16 PM
Weighing in on the Statute of Limitations discussion.
In my twenties (hurump two decades ago) I was a Judo black belt and devoted weight lifter and had a bench press of 245 lbs multiple reps.
I have not done a bench press exercise since that time - over twenty years! After 7 months of CrossFit, Luca had me do a BP workout and I benched 210 3X. This week I did Lynne and BP my body weight (185 lbs) nearly 50 times. Certainly I'll get to 245 in the near future.
I guess, as long as you're doing CrossFit you don't need no statute of limitations!
Posted by: RonC at November 6, 2009 2:23 PM
If you have done something legit then there is no statue of limitations or shouldn't be. That's your mark and you earned it.
Your 1:19 is your mark Craig and you earned it.Weather you ever do it again is of no consequence as you did do it once.
My times in comparison to you fire breathers suck. I have steadily improved on time and most often RX my workouts.
I am always amazed at the DCF members and their efforts in the workouts. What is really impressive is the ones that stick around to coach the slower ones to the finish. No lonelier feeling that everyone else being done and walking away and your still not finished.
I could have joined UFC and saved money I stayed with DCF cause of the progress I made and the community. I feel like I am part of a team and that is very important to me.
And I can yell at people when I helping them get through there workouts.
My best row is 1:29 I have set my longterm sights on Craigs time. Regardless of weather I get it or not it will be fun trying.
And I would love to beat one of you fire breathers just one time in a legit fashion. why?
So I can say you just got beat by Grandpa!
Posted by: ronnielo at November 6, 2009 2:27 PM
My max legit bench press,at age 39 and a body weight of 235 was 475LBS. The was a controlled down, pause and press the only help I recieved was on the hand off. On a good day I can still do 315 for a few reps at 205.
What has brought me more satisfaction was doing filty 50in less then 40 mins. And when I can Power clean 225 for reps I will be very happy.

Ronnielo - I'm standing under you in an earthquake!
Posted by: RonC at November 6, 2009 2:47 PM
Morning classes were great...Ron C. 9:31, great to see you, as always..Tami Rx'd it in 17:14. Big Kevin did a 9:35, Dennis 11:30, and Michele in 13:24.
2p- Arron scaled up..did 95# in 12:26!! Way to go! Kathy in 10:51, Terry in 9:27, and Clara came in to play(after a week of being sick. Nice work!
Posted by: sarah@ Diablo Crossfit at November 6, 2009 2:49 PM
LOL RonC.. now I have someone to grab and lift over my head to protect me from falling objects. Like I said my Crossfit times mean so much more to me then that lift did. And in all aspects much harder to attain.
Posted by: ronnielo at November 6, 2009 3:13 PM
The RON's are total firebreathers already!!! STUDS!
A record is always a record, PR is always a PR!!! As long as it is witnessed. You don't take someone's hole in one away from them because they can't hit another one!
I have witnessed most all Craig's bench presses! So, 405 is legit. Just ask him what his little brother use to bench press?
Craig had a 12 plate back squat too!
I love all the yelling especially Craig's so I can give him the stink eye!
Posted by: Yvonne at November 6, 2009 3:18 PM
Thanks, Yvonne!!!
Ronnielo, I can't agree more with your statement of Crossfit "performance" being harder to attain. The take home from my personal story is that CrossFit is making me stronger and faster (1:24 400M recently) and my age is not relevant.
Posted by: RonC at November 6, 2009 3:47 PM
LOL at the stink eye comment.
Only 12 plate back squat I ever did was at the dinner table..pre paleo days.
I watched a young boy of about 12 get a hole in one on a par 3 course. He really was not any good at golf but for one moment it all came together and no one can take it away from him.

I have a feeling that big Chris can kill this WOD
If I can remember his spit times on 500m repeats were all very close. Get in there Chris!
Nice Job Stav & Big Dave! super fast
I will be calling on all you rowing peeps for the January Concept2 "TEAM" challenge..
any takers? this challenge is a total meters rowed over a 30 day time limit.
Posted by: 6am...Matt at November 6, 2009 4:01 PM
Thanks Yvonne!! Right on RonC!From what I have seen your pretty much kick ass on the WOD's

SOFTBALL IS ON!!!
Posted by: Yvonne at November 6, 2009 4:16 PM
Old guys rule (older than 45). Rons are legit - by the way anyone else notice how ripped Ronnielo is getting?
And CF PR's seem way more satisfying.
Posted by: Craig at November 6, 2009 5:11 PM
Old guys rule, and you cut it off at 45, Craig? I'm less than 4 years off that mark! So unfair... I want to rule, too.
Posted by: Mark L. at November 6, 2009 7:48 PM
Mark, you can't rule too. That would create a slippery slope where I could then claim to rule since you only have one year on me. Pretty soon everyone will want to rule and it will just be a mess of rulers with no one to rule. You are just going to have to put in your time and pay your dues. Then you can rule. We all know we let the old people think they rule just so they leave us alone anyhow.
Posted by: Jeff B at November 6, 2009 8:57 PM
